Suspected drunk driving: Mother on Long Island kills 9-year-old son in ghost train accident; charges threatened

A mother suspected of driving under the influence killed her own 9-year-old son in a horrific ghost crash on the Southern State Parkway in Long Island.

A 32-year-old mother from Bay Shore, Long Island, is accused of killing her own 9-year-old son while driving under the influence of alcohol, resulting in a ghost accident on the Southern State Parkway.

As ABC7 reported, police said the accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. local time on Thursday, August 22, near Exit 42.

The Long Island mother was reportedly taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. The Centerport resident reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The crash resulted in a four-vehicle pileup, with the occupants of three other vehicles also taken to South Side Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital. All survived with non-life-threatening injuries.

As for the 9-year-old boy who died in the accident, the officer, who had previously been chasing the vehicle in the wrong direction, while attempting to stop the car, found the child in the back seat of the vehicle. CPR was performed and first responders also used an automated external defibrillator to save his life. He was also taken to the hospital where he later died.

His mother was given a breathalyzer test at the scene. The results have not been released publicly, but she will reportedly face charges.

The Suffolk County District Attorney and the State Attorney General’s Office will investigate the accident.

“This was a traumatic event for everyone involved,” said Suffolk County Sheriff’s Deputy John Beck, adding that the deputy sheriff who removed the boy from the SUV “will forever have the image of that boy’s face in his mind.”
