Freeman High School, which opened in Katy on August 14 at 7800 Katy Hockley Road, is the tenth high school in the Katy ISD and will serve the growing population of the northwest quadrant of the district and relieve enrollment pressure on Paetow High School and Katy High School. The school is named for the Freeman family, which has deep roots in Katy’s history and is known for its outstanding civic leadership. Its members have served as mayors, city council members, and have been active on the volunteer fire department and school board. In addition to their civic involvement, the Freemans have a long-standing connection to agriculture and education that dates back to the late 1800s. The school’s mascot will be the Golden Eagles. Freeman’s principal is Gina Cobb.

Nelson Junior High School – the 18th and newest middle school in Katy ISD – is also named after early settlers of Katy. The Nelson family’s history spans five generations in the Katy area. Family members have graduated from Katy ISD, served on the board of trustees and been deeply involved in various district programs such as FFA. The Nelsons’ connection to the land on which Nelson Junior High is built is unique, as the family purchased the land generations ago from a beloved Katy ISD teacher. Kara Morgan is the principal of the school, whose mascot is the Hawks. The campus is located at 25747 Longenbaugh Road in Katy, next to Freeman High School and Youngblood Elementary.
