Gojira surprised the world with their hellishly hard rendition of “Ah! Ça Ira” at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris. The performance included everything from beheaded Marie-Antoinette Singers, blood cannons and lots of fire – everything that makes for a great metal show, but shocking if you’re not familiar with it.

One person was surprised Avenged sevenfold Bassist Johnny Christwho in his Drinks with Johnny Podcast that he was completely shocked when he heard Gojira a loud noise comes from another room in his house.

“That was so cool. I watched it. I wasn’t expecting it. I watched it with my wife. We watch every opening ceremony together. And it’s always cool,” said Christ. “You see the country coming together, all the artists in the country, they put a team together and say, ‘We’re going to show all our art and history.’ And I think they’ve done a great job.”

He continued: “I was in the other room and I heard metal playing. I was like, ‘What the hell?’ I walked out and saw this incredible performance on top of the Houses of Parliament or whatever the castle was. And I was like, ‘Wait a minute. That’s fucking crazy.’ Gojira. I know these guys. This is damn Gojira right there.’ And I was really happy for her. I was like, ‘This is fucking cool.’ And then, of course, 30 seconds later, I was like, ‘Why the hell have I never been up there and done that before?’ Damn, dude. I’m moving to France. Screw it.”

Christ later he remarked that he was impressed by how the whole ceremony in and out GojiraThe performance was impressive in that it didn’t feel completely out of place.

“It was so cool. And they did a cool job – it didn’t feel like it was like, ‘Oh, now we’re just going to go to metal and it’s going to feel totally out of place with the rest of the ceremony.’ No, they kept it anyway. And the way they hung off to the side, doing that shot, showing everything, going to the different windows and stuff, I thought it was really well done.”
