This .8 million Cape Dutch gem in the UK was built as a wedding gift for a South African bride

Forget Crate & Barrel. Add this century-old Cape Dutch-style home to your wish list! The 31.5-acre estate in the rolling hills of the Chilterns, known as “The Danes,” was originally built in the 1920s as a wedding gift for a South African bride. The stately property was later made available to the army during World War II and recently underwent extensive renovations by its current owner. Now, the idyllic English country estate, located less than 30 miles outside of central London, has hit the market for a whopping £8.25 million (or about $10.8 million).

“The Danes is an extraordinary property, reimagined for modern living a century after it was built,” said Joanna Cocking, Head of Private Office and Prime Country Sales at Hamptons.

In the picturesque property’s 100-year history, there have been only six residents, including the seller, designer Alessandra Galtrucco. During Galtrucco’s ownership, she undertook an extensive renovation of the property, carefully restoring The Danes to its original splendor. The residence itself is in traditional Cape Dutch style, which includes trademarks such as curved gables and a brand new thatched roof. The electrical and plumbing systems have also been upgraded.

In total, the house comprises four reception rooms and five bedrooms across 700 square metres. On the ground floor there are polished concrete floors and a preserved Art Deco staircase, reminiscent of the house’s origins. If you wish to host overnight guests but still want privacy, there is also a separate two-bed cottage.

The Danes is surrounded by verdant, landscaped gardens. The approximately 10 acres of formal gardens were professionally designed by Alexander-Sinclair, a renowned journalist and vice-president of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Elsewhere on the property, Galtrucco helped plant over 200 seedlings.

On the property’s 32 or so acres you’ll also find wildflower meadows, a tennis court and a six-stall barn. Of course, to protect all this beauty there have been several land purchases over time to prevent development on the surrounding properties and ensure the property retains an unfettered sense of privacy with unobstructed views of the countryside.

“It’s rare that the grounds and gardens are so enticing,” added Cocking. “This home is the total package – impeccably designed interiors meet beautiful natural gardens,” which serve as a tranquil backdrop to the elegant home.
