Whether we’re talking about how gratefully a nation embraced President Joe Biden as he passed the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris and a new generation of leaders, or we’re talking about former President Barack Obama reminding us that “the bonds that bind us as a nation and a people” are stronger than the hateful rhetoric, conspiracy theories and division in an address reminiscent of the 2004 speech that launched him into the national spotlight, one thing is clear: Something special is happening in Chicago. The DNC convention is brimming with a sense of hope and joy that is part grassroots movement, part family reunion. And the contrast with last month’s GOP convention couldn’t be more stark.

On the first day of the Republican National Convention, MAGA-favorite Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene attacked LGBTQ Americans and immigrants, spread misinformation and referred to Donald Trump as a “founding father” while the crowd hissed and booed at any sign of diversity. Contrast that with the first day of the Democratic National Convention this week, when Rep. Jasmine Crockett went through Trump and Harris’ presidential bids line by line and correctly noted, “Kamala Harris has a resume. Donald Trump has a criminal record.”

But Crockett was not satisfied with that.

DNC participants reject popular accusations of Republicans being hypocritical at the convention: “Apples and oranges”

Crockett spoke of Harris not only as a transformative leader, but as a person, a product of the American dream and a woman who takes the time out of her busy schedule to listen to a new congresswoman and remind her that she is exactly where God wants her to be.

She spoke of Harris as a beacon of hope and freedom, leading the way forward, and most importantly, she reminded us all of how important it is that we all participate in this election. She urged America to vote.

Greene and the Republicans have never bothered to do that because they don’t think they need to. Greene and the Republicans believe they are entitled to the White House. Crockett and the Democrats are working to earn it.

That’s just one example. But it’s been repeated again and again this week in Chicago.

CNN moderator Van Jones raves about Barack and Michelle Obama’s speeches at the Democratic Party Convention: Like an “oasis” in a “spiritual desert”

While Republicans cheered Gregg Abbot, the 66-year-old Texas governor who signed the state’s near-total abortion ban in 2021, Democrats supported Amanda and Josh Zurawski, the young couple who were turned away from the Texas hospital when Amanda suffered a painful and fatal miscarriage because Abbot’s ban did not allow doctors to care for her.

While Republicans fielded Peter Navarro, a former Trump adviser and another old white man who spoke just hours after being released from federal prison, Democrats fielded Ana Navarro, a former Nicaraguan refugee whose bold vision and courage exemplify a new generation of democratic leadership. She has never been to prison.

FLASHBACK: OBAMA WAS ONE OF THE FIRST STRONG DEMS TO SUPPORT WALZ AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS POLITICAL CAREER

The Republican National Convention featured Representatives Nancy Mace and Matt Gaetz, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. The Democratic National Convention featured Senators Bernie Sanders and Chuck Schumer, of course, but also DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison and National Convention Committee Chairman Minyon Moore, the historic team that organized the DNC convention. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Senator Raphael G. Warnock, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, Angela Alsobrooks, and more.

We’ve seen labor leaders like AFL-CIO President Elizabeth H. Shuler and UAW President Shawn Fain speak at the Democratic National Convention. We’ve seen trailblazers like Representatives Maxine Waters and Jim Clyburn. We’ve even seen former Trump supporters like Rich Logis and former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan.

Now, the conspiracy theorists and skeptics will try to dismiss this as just a list of speakers. But it’s more than that. Much more. You see, when I watched the Republican National Convention, I couldn’t see myself on the stage or in the audience because people like me are not who MAGA and Trump’s Project 2025 are made for. But we are welcome at the Democratic National Convention because Democrats know that diversity is what makes us strong. That’s where hope and joy come from. That’s the mood that’s different.

So when you turn on the television to see what’s going on in Chicago or watch the speeches by Governor Tim Walz and Vice President Kamala Harris, look at the stage and the audience, and you see America.

You will see men and women working together for better jobs, higher wages, reproductive freedom, and equal justice. You will see Black voters for affordable housing, Latinos for infrastructural improvements to education, Asian Americans for infrastructure, and even white voters for justice reform. You will see young voters fighting to expand student debt forgiveness and end climate change, hand in hand with seniors who support Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and President Biden’s $35 cap on insulin costs. You will see LGBTQ Americans fighting against Project 2025, with straight Americans right alongside them.

Ultimately, the Democratic convention puts our spotlight on America. At the Republican convention, the spotlight was only on Donald Trump.

But they had Hulk Hogan, so that’s probably the most important thing.
