Multiple Grammy-winning R&B artist John Legend will join Sheila E. onstage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday night. This is the latest in a series of outstanding musical performances from artists such as Common, Patti LaBelle, Jason Isbell and Mickey Guyton. Motown legend Stevie Wonder was also spotted backstage rehearsing.

“I LOVE being in Chicago right now!” Legend posted on Instagram on Wednesday. “So many inspiring changemakers have come to town. So many people who want to make our country stronger.”

“Tonight, @JohnLegend will honor two Minnesota icons: the one and only Prince and our future Vice President @TimWalz,” DNC spokeswoman Emily Soong posted on X, formerly Twitter.

This won’t be Legend’s first Prince performance. In 2020, he covered “Nothing Compares 2 U” at the Grammys as part of a tribute to the late singer-songwriter.

This year’s raucous DNC was more like a dance club at times, especially during the ceremonial roll call of the states, when DJ Cassidy played a different song for each individual state (Florida got “I Won’t Back Down” by local Tom Petty). James Taylor was originally scheduled to perform on Monday, but was postponed due to time constraints.

This will be Legend’s second DNC appearance. In 2020, when the performance was largely virtual due to the COVID pandemic, Legend shared the stage with Common and a gospel choir to honor civil rights leader John Lewis with a performance of “Glory,” the theme song they wrote for the 2014 film “Selma.”

After the DNC, Legend has to return to the South. Starting Sunday, he will be performing in Florida.

When does John Legend perform in Florida?

Legend will play two shows in Florida in August and one in October.
