Sharpie pushes creativity to the limit at Art Battle Los Angeles

Your favorite marker may be from Atlanta (or at least headquartered here), but this weekend it will crisscross the country to sponsor Art Battle at a showcase event in Los Angeles. From small-time artists to working professionals, Sharpie can be found in the pockets and backpacks of people across the country. This weekend, an evening of creativity will take place in California with three rounds of live art competition. Armed with an arsenal of Sharpie products, including the new Sharpie Creative Markers, and Art Battle paint, the best artists from LA and across the country will step up to their easels to race against the clock for audience votes, prizes, and the title of champion.

“Sharpie Creative Markers open up a new level of creativity at Art Battle by making bold colors shine on almost any surface,” said Gina Lázaro, Vice President, Brand Management, Writing at Newell Brands. “These colorfast acrylic markers give the artists in this competition the opportunity to freely express themselves with tools that can transform any canvas into a work of art.”

“The new Sharpie Creative Marker is a phenomenal tool for our artists during their live performances,” said Simon Plashkes, co-founder of Art Battle. “The bullet tip is way ahead of the competition and the brush tip is unlike anything we’ve seen before – it really enables a whole new range of strategies in timed competitions.”

Art Battle attendees and artists can visit the Sharpie Bus, a creativity hub on wheels built to celebrate the brand’s 60th anniversary and designed to inspire future artists across the country. There, fans can learn more about the brand’s iconic history and try out the 12 vibrant colors and paint-like ink of the new Sharpie Creative Markers for themselves. Throughout the year, the Sharpie Bus will stop at some of the most creative events and festivals across the U.S., including Art Battle LA as the final stop on The World Is Your Canvas tour. Art Battle LA will take place on Saturday, August 24th at the Academy LA, 6021 Hollywood Blvd. Doors open at 5pm, with the first round of competition beginning at 6pm. Over $5,000 in prizes, including a year’s worth of Sharpie products, will be awarded in three 20-minute rounds judged by the audience and judges. Since 2001, the global live art competition has thrilled and captivated audiences and artists alike, offering a glimpse into the creative process of over 10,000 artists at over 3,000 events worldwide.

In 1964, the iconic Sharpie Fine Point black marker became the first permanent marker in pen form. Today, Sharpie offers a wide range of permanent markers, pens, highlighters and more for the classroom, office and home. Designed for precision and performance, Sharpie’s markers and writing instruments are offered in a variety of specialty and art styles. Sharpie is part of Newell Brands’ global portfolio of leading brands. Newell Brands was founded in 1903 by Edgar Newell in Ogdensburg, New York, as a manufacturer of metal curtain rods. Today, it is a leading global consumer goods company with a strong portfolio of well-known brands (Shharpie, Yankee Candle, Paper Mate…).
