Registration began on August 12, the secret element required for the films will be announced on August 30 and the films must be submitted by September 30, according to Film Commission Director Bega Metzner.

The films will be shown at Star Hall on October 4. The cost is $50 per team or free for all high school students using the code MOABHS.

“This year we’re turning the Moab scripts into Monument Valley movies,” Metzner wrote in a press release. “(We’re) giving you the opportunity to turn them into another genre. Think science fiction like ‘Thelma & Louise,’ ‘Easy Rider: Romantic Comedy,’ or ‘The Horror Lone Ranger!'”

Don’t worry, we’re not doing remakes or reboots of these films – we’re just looking to be inspired by them. So get creative and get Moab Moviemakin.”

How does it work?

Contestants will be randomly assigned two Moab-produced films and two genres. They will choose the film and genre and will be able to re-conceive, re-shoot and repurpose their film, including the secret element, which they will receive on August 30th.

Movies to choose from include The Lone Ranger, Thelma & Louise, Mission Impossible 2, Austin Powers in Goldmember, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Stagecoach, Forrest Gump, Galaxy Quest, Con Air, 127 Hours, Horizon: An American Saga, Need for Speed, Transformers, and MacGuyver. Yes, the latter was on TV, but the pilot episode was still filmed in Moab!

Genres include science fiction, action, horror, silent, noir, comedy, romance, western, fantasy and drama.

The maximum running time is 7.5 minutes (7:30) plus 60 seconds for the credits.
