Nitro woman celebrates 105th birthday

NITRO, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A Kanawha County woman is celebrating a major milestone. She turns 105 this month.

Friends and family recently hosted a dinner party to celebrate.

Virginia Elva Cadd was born on August 13, 1919 in Nitro, West Virginia.

At this time, Cadd’s father was working as a carpenter in the nitroglycerin factory during World War I.

Cadd is the youngest of seven siblings.

Cadd married her husband, George Cadd, in 1939. He died in 1981. Cadd’s family says they lived in Charleston, Dunbar and Cross Lanes all those years.

They had three children: Linda, Stanley and Jeanette.

Cadd now lives in an assisted living facility and, according to her family, she is the oldest resident there.

A hospice worker who recently visited the facility told the family that Cadd is the oldest living female resident in West Virginia and that family members are working to confirm that information.

One of Cadd’s daughters, Jeanette Bowen, says doctors often ask her what her mother’s secret is.

Bowen says her mother never smoked or drank alcohol, she maintained a good diet over the years and still loves sweets.

She doesn’t take many medications, Bowen said, and her mind and memory are still quite good.

Her family says she was a wonderful person, a wonderful mother and friend to so many.
