At the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff heartwarmingly introduced not only himself but also the “big, beautiful blended family” that he and Kamala Harris have built.
But it started with the best blind date story ever.
“In 2013, I had a controversial conversation with a client. We resolved the issue and at the end of the conversation, the now satisfied client offered me a blind date, and that’s how I got Kamala Harris’ phone number,” he said.
“For generations, people have debated when to call the person they’re being set up with. And no one has ever suggested 8:30, and yet I called at that time. I got Kamala’s voicemail and just started blabbing. ‘Hey, it’s Doug. I’m on my way to an early meeting. Again, it’s Doug.’
“I tried to catch the words out of the air and just put them back in my mouth,” he continued. “After what seemed like an eternity, I hung up. By the way, Kamala saved that voicemail and lets me listen to it on every anniversary.”
From there it just gets better, including its conclusion.
“Kamala Harris was exactly the right person for me at an important moment in my life. She is exactly the right president at this moment in our country’s history.”
