John Stamos had David Lipper write Viper’s love song for Full House

Almost 30 years after Viper DJ appeared on Full houseDavid Lipper says he still earns more money from the song he wrote than from royalties for his appearances on the popular sitcom.

According to the 50-year-old actor and producer, this is partly thanks to John Stamos.

In a recent episode of the Rewatch podcast by Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber How rude, Tanneritos! Lipper explained that Stamos and co-star Bob Saget initially took him under their wing when he joined the Full house as a new member of Uncle Jesse’s band and DJ’s lover in the eighth and final season of the show.

Lipper said he went through “a lot of emotions” when he was cast in the role of Viper after Fox dropped a pilot for a sitcom in which he was to star alongside Giovanni Ribisi, Hilary Swank and a very young Kaley Cuoco.

“I was not an enthusiastic spectator (of Full house). I honestly didn’t realize how big this show was,” he told Sweetin and Barber. “And after watching the pilot, which I thought would change my life, I was still disappointed.”

“I had the lead role in a great show, so, an incredibly funny script, and now I’m the last in the hierarchy to join this cast,” he continued. “So there’s this feeling mixed with: This is a family. They’re all super tight, and you know, where is my place? What can I say? What shouldn’t I say? How loud should I be?”

Despite his uncertainty, Full house The cast was more than friendly, especially Stamos and Saget. He described Saget, who died in 2022, as “my person on the show.”

“But also Stamos,” Lipper added. “He spent a lot of time with me. He was super funny, super cool. He took me out. He, Bob and I went out several times for drinks and stuff.”

Over the course of the four episodes Lipper appeared in, DJ and Viper had their ups and downs. Their on-off relationship culminated in the January 1995 episode “DJ’s Choice,” in which Viper attempted to win back Candace Cameron Bure’s character with an acoustic ballad after they broke up.

According to Lipper, Stamos, a musician himself, had him write his own music for the episode.

“‘You know what? I make enough royalties from this show. You write the song,'” Lipper recalled Stamos saying. “And so one of the songs I sang to DJ, I make more money from the music royalties than I did from the acting royalties on the show. And he just said, ‘Take it.'”
