Florida Voter Registration by Party – August 20, 2024

Conclusion: Voter registration trends in Florida have not exactly been on the Democrats’ side in recent years. For nearly twenty years, Republicans have steadily eroded the lead that Florida Democrats have held in voter registration since partisan voter registration began in the 1970s. In November 2021, amid massive pandemic-related relocations, Republican voter registrations outnumbered Democrats for the first time. And since then, the Republican lead in voter registration has grown every month. As 2023 begins, Florida Democrats decided to take a new direction with party leadership naming former Agriculture Secretary Nikki Fried as the party’s incoming leadership. It’s safe to say that this has not turned the tide in Florida back in Democrats’ favor. Last year, Florida Democrats saw active voter registrations drop by more than 566,000 voters. In 2024, the trend of a growing Republican lead in the state has remained the same.

The latest update from the Florida Elections Department reflects voters Registration information nationwide.

These are the changes to voter registration in 2024 starting in August:

  • DEM: -34,288 (+26,895 in July)
  • GOP: +182,806 (+67,247 in July)
  • NPA/Other: +65,108 (+39,283 in July)

The current breakdown of registered voters is as follows…

  • DEM: 31.9%
  • Republicans: 39.3%
  • NPA/Other: 28.8%

There was an overall increase in voter registrations in the lead-up to Florida’s August primary. However, the gains were clearly not uniform, as multi-year trends remained the same. Republicans continued to significantly outperform Democrats throughout the month, which in turn led to a record Republican lead in voter registrations. In addition, Democrats also continue to underperform NPA registrations. If current trends continue, Democrats could be in danger of slipping to third place in the state in the not-too-distant future.

The Republican lead over the Democrats is now a record 1 million voters. This total includes a net change of 40,352 voters in July. Of Florida’s 67 counties – only 10 currently have Democratic majorities in voter registration. One district to keep an eye on is one of the state’s largest, Hillsborough, which includes Tampa. If the current pace of voter registration changes continues, this district could be the next to flip.
