John D. Burk | News, Sports, Jobs

John D. Burk, 81, Duncansville, died Saturday at UPMC Altoona surrounded by family. He was born in Chester, the son of the late David H. Burk and Theresa M. (Rhodes) Burk-Wilt.

He married Vicki L. Teegardin on September 24, 1965 at St. Catherine of Siena Church.

Surviving are his wife, three children: Lisa Colabrese (Ron), Mark Burk (Lisa) and Mike Burk (Michelle), 12 grandchildren: Ben, RJ, Lance, Lauren, Karissa, Lindsey, Chase, Logan, Juliana, Tanner, Rylee and Grant, two great-grandchildren, Levi and Grey, and a sister, Mary Bowser (Robert).

John graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1962. Before attending Johnstown Barber School, he served in the Army for four years.

He began his career as a barber as an apprentice at Peoples Barber Shop. In 1967, he began working at The Mall Barber Shop, which he purchased in 1989. John sold the business in 2007, but continued working there until he began working at Broad Avenue Barber Shop in 2016. He retired in June 2024 after 59 years of barbering.

He was a member of the Allegheny Club, the Heidelberg Country Club, the American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus, where he enjoyed helping out at the chicken BBQ.

John enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and going to the casino. He loved the Christmas season and decorating, but most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his family.

A memorial mass will be held on Monday, August 26, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Duncansville. Rev. Jeremy J. Mohler will officiate.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., Duncansville.
