Interim Enterprise CIO John Ellis retires from Emory

After more than 20 years of service at Emory, John Ellis plans to retire at the end of the calendar year. Ellis has served as the company’s interim Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Senior Vice Provost for Information Technology since March 2023. Previously, Ellis served as deputy CIO and held several leadership positions at Emory.

Ellis’s resignation was announced August 15 in a joint statement from Christopher L. Augostini, executive vice president for business and administration, the company’s chief financial officer and vice chair of the board of directors of Emory Healthcare, Ravi V. Bellamkonda, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs of Emory University, and Ravi Thadhani, executive vice president for health affairs of Emory University, executive director of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center and vice chair of the board of directors of Emory Healthcare.

“During his tenure at Emory, John has earned the trust and respect of faculty, staff, students and the entire Emory community,” Augostini, Bellamkonda and Thadhani said in the message. “Most importantly, John has made significant contributions to the Emory enterprise by transforming the IT department into what it is today.”

Ellis joined Emory in November 2003 as co-director of academic technologies and subsequently became director of integration for the IT department. In this role, he led IT service management, marketing and communications, identity management, web hosting, and integration middleware.

In addition to consistently focusing on IT staff development, Ellis also shared his knowledge and insights with staff development across the university by serving as a mentor for Emory’s Emerging Leaders and Mentor Emory programs.

A transition plan will be announced in the coming weeks, Augostini, Bellamkonda and Thadhani said.
