Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called on Vice President Kamala Harris to pursue an agenda “aimed at economic stability and growth for working people.”

“She’s already off to a great start,” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said in an interview with the Associated Press about Vice President Kamala Harris’s evolving economic program.

Johnson, who has emerged as Harris’ surrogate on the progressive scene and at events aimed at black men in cities like Detroit, highlighted Harris’s upbringing and record as attorney general as potential strengths in the campaign.

“The Vice President has championed working people throughout her career,” Johnson said.

“The economic stability of our country really requires someone who understands the interests of the working people,” he claimed.

“She knows what it’s like to struggle, just like Governor Walz. Like me, he’s a former social studies teacher,” Johnson said of the Minnesota governor.

Johnson, who on Sunday called Chicago “one of the most diverse communities in the country,” defended the city’s record on race and inclusion as it wrestles with historic challenges such as the refugee crisis and debates about racial equity.
