Westfield Washington Schools receives construction updates • Latest release

Westfield Washington Schools’ latest construction projects are moving forward as part of the school district’s long-term strategic expansion plan, “Destination Westfield,” which is geared toward growth.

Jonathan Haggarty, executive vice president of Meyer Najem Construction, updated the school board in July on current construction projects at the district’s new transportation and event center.

The new transportation center will be located on Ind. 32 west of Little Eagle Creek and will include parking for 250 buses, driver training stations, six mechanic bays, meeting rooms and expanded break areas. The center is scheduled for completion in June 2025.

Since the $52.5 million facility broke ground in April, fencing and grading have been completed, as well as site construction and utilities installation. Haggarty said 3D modeling of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems has also been completed.

As of July 1, Meyer Najem had only drawn on $12,540 of the $1.16 million emergency fund. Those funds were used for tree removal along Ind. 32.

“It was very inexpensive. We’ve only used 1 percent of it so far, it was just a change,” Haggarty said.

This month, crews are working on installing stormwater pipes, doing foundation and masonry work, drilling geothermal wells, and awaiting steel delivery to begin installation.

Representatives from Meyer Najem will join the Board in September with the next Transportation Center update.

Haggarty said the event center, now officially called Shamrock Station, will go out to bid this month. Shamrock Station is the renovation of the old Westfield Washington Public Library to create space for event programming, a culinary arts space and an educational space for life skills programs.

“We will make it a goal to contact you at the September board meeting to get those contracts approved and start work immediately,” he said. “This is a slightly delayed schedule due to some revisions to the budgets and design from four or five months ago. Our intention is still to have this open by (the start of the) 2025-26 school year.”
