The worst way to end Yellowstone is the best way to shape his future without Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III. After five seasons, Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western flagship series will come to an end. Despite a lengthy hiatus due to the ongoing drama between the franchise creator and Costner, Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 is already confirmed for November 2024, and the remaining cast and crew have been working on it for the past few months. However, the conclusion of the main series is not the end of the modern branch of storytelling. Sheridan already has a few spinoffs in the works.
Sheridan has long been involved in the construction of the Yellowstone Universe with a series of prequels that trace the history of the Duttons’ ranch. This time, however, he is working on expanding the franchise with some contemporary series. Recently, the spin-off, directed by Michelle Pfeiffer, called The Madison has received some significant updates. There is also the previously developed 6666 series. Finally, there is a direct sequel, in which Kayce, Rip and Beth will be seen. Of this group, this one hinges the most on the ending of Yellowstone, simply because it features characters who have not only been in the game for as long, but also have strong ties to Costner’s patriarch.

There are so many theories about how Yellowstone could end. Costner’s non-involvement adds an additional challenge to an already daunting task. Sheridan also has to explain what happened to the Dutton patriarch, and considering how much he cares about the ranch, he needs a solid explanation for his sudden absence. One of the worst ways the author Yellowstone is to end it with a big cliffhanger. There’s no way Sheridan can leave John’s fate hanging in the balance, even if the sequel comes. It should be the end of Costner’s story in the universe.
Granted, Sheridan still needs a solid story to keep the sequel going, but if people tune in to see the Yellowstone sequel when it’s released, it has a better chance of success.
On the other hand, however, End Yellowstone with a massive cliffhanger is the most effective way to start its sequel. It gives viewers a clear reason to come back and watch the new show again, even if it will feature few of the main show’s ensemble cast. Granted, Sheridan still needs a solid story to carry the sequel forward, but getting people to watch the new show, Yellowstone The chances of a sequel’s success increase when it is released. This is especially true if Sheridan stores the resolution of John’s fate in it.

As his spiritual child, nobody knows the Yellowstone Franchise better than Sheridan. Because of this, there is confidence that he will find a way to address this narrative dilemma. The key here is to give John’s story a definitive ending while leaving questions hanging about the future of his family and the ranch. Perhaps Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 may reveal what happened to the Dutton patriarch, but leave the consequences of his fate in the sequel undecided. This may effectively set up Kayce, Rip and Beth’s future without John and maybe even Jamie.
