APD releases charts showing a significant decline in gun crime

Albuquerque – In a press release late Friday afternoon, Albuquerque Police released some Subscribe Data charts suggesting that gun crimes have decreased compared to the previous year. The press release did not provide any data or numbers to back up these numbers for comparison.

The press release states:

“Albuquerque has seen a decline in three major categories of gun crime so far in 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.” The press release continues:

“We are seeing a significant decrease in gun homicides, shootings with injuries and gun violence,” said APD Chief Harold Medina. “The combination of proactive crime fighting measures and successful investigations are starting to pay off. We still have more work to do, but these crime statistics are encouraging.” The number of non-negligent homicides involving firearms decreased by 32% year-over-year between 2023 and 2024.”

We will attempt to request records from 2023 to verify these graphs, but a records request for these types of numbers will take nearly 6 to 8 months to get back to anyone, as APD records managers explain that any request, no matter how simple, will be treated as “burdensome”. We asked APD civilian press secretary Gilbert Gallegos where they got their numbers, but according to their internal policies, we were ignored.
