Family of six dies after eating a local delicacy in Kano

A family of six, including mother Alhaqatu Abdulkarim and her five children, tragically died after eating a local delicacy in Karkari village in Gwarzo Local Government Area of ​​Kano State.

The Kano State Police confirmed the incident and said the widow and her five children died after eating danwake, a traditional Hausa dish.

The victims were admitted to Gwarzo General Hospital for treatment of abdominal complications but succumbed to their condition while receiving medical attention.

Yakubu Danazumi, the district head of Karkari village, confirmed the details in a telephone interview on Sunday.

He reported that the tragic event began on Tuesday when two of the children died, followed by two more the next day. The mother died on Thursday and the last child died on Friday.

“We have buried the victims according to Islamic rites and will perform the seven-day prayer for all of them next Tuesday,” Danazumi said.

He also mentioned that the father had died about seven months ago, leaving the widow with her five children, while the second wife had six children.

The deceased were identified as 35-year-old Alhaqatu Abdulkarim (mother), Usman Abdulkarim (9 years), Fiddausi Abdulkarim (11 years), Hafsa Abdulkarim (7 years), Jamilu Abdulkarim (4 years) and Bashari Abdulkarim (19 years).

Kano State Police Spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of death.

Police are waiting for the hospital’s medical report to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy.

The incident reportedly occurred last Thursday after the widow, who was responsible for her five children, used expired cassava flour to prepare the food.
