The only way Andy Reid will “accept” the passes behind Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ back

The only way Andy Reid will “accept” the passes behind Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ back

The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up for a historic 2024 season. Kansas City could make NFL history by winning the Super Bowl, as they would be the only team to do so three years in a row. That pressure hasn’t stopped Patrick Mahomes and his friends from having a little fun during the preseason.

Patrick Mahomes played in yesterday’s season-ending loss to the Detroit Lions. On his last drive of the game toward the end of the first quarter, he threw a daring behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce. The pass went for eight yards.

Mahomes was apparently encouraged by Reid to try behind-the-back passes in practice. He recently even managed to make a pass to running back Isiah Pacheco.

Reid said he would accept those trick throws from Mahomes as long as he completed the pass. He did not reveal how he would react to an incomplete pass or an interception.

“You have to think positive,” Reid told ESPN’s Adam Teicher. Reid added that he had never seen such a shot succeed in a game. “In basketball, it happens every game, multiple times every game. So it’s not a big deal to play behind the back.”

It will be interesting to see if Mahomes ever attempts a behind-the-back pass during the regular season or playoffs. In the preseason, an intercepted ball has no consequences, but in September, that all changes.

Chiefs fans should look for some sort of behind-the-back passing trick, something Kansas City seems to really like.

Travis Kelce provided further fun on the sidelines after the first team’s offense was withdrawn from yesterday’s preseason game.

Kelce spoke to a reporter on the sidelines who asked him about Mahomes’ ridiculous behind-the-back pass, and took the opportunity to poke fun at his friend and teammate.

“You know he’s got the vocal thing,” Kelce said earlier, mimicking a bad Mahomes accent. “So he kind of mumbled the play, I couldn’t hear him. I went to the line and tried to decipher what he was saying.”

Kelce was excited to detail what happened after the snap.

“Before I knew it, he grabbed the ball and then I saw him running out of my sight toward the sideline. So I tried to help my guy! When I looked over, he was already in full form like a photo on a sports card and threw me the ball,” Kelce said, gesturing behind his back. “So, I guess right place, right time!”

Fortunately, this behind-the-back pass worked better than Kelce’s Mahomes imitation.
