Mumbai: In a shocking incident on Sunday, around 80 students of a district school in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra were hospitalized after eating biscuits provided under a feeding programme.

“On Saturday morning around 8:30 am, 257 students showed symptoms of food poisoning after eating biscuits. 153 of them were taken to the hospital, some were treated and sent home,” Dr Babasaheb Ghughe, a doctor at the hospital, was quoted as saying in an India Today report.

A total of seven students developed severe symptoms after eating the food and were taken to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Civil Hospital for further treatment, Ghughe added.

Schoolchildren in K’taka receive eggs all six days a week

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday announced that students of government and government-aided schools will be provided eggs six days a week in collaboration with the Azim Premji Foundation. Earlier, the state government had already provided eggs to schoolchildren two days a week. With the new policy, students will now be provided eggs on all six days. Siddaramaiah was speaking at the inauguration of a programme in collaboration with the Azim Premji Foundation to provide free supplementary nutritious food to children of government and government-aided primary and secondary schools six days a week. Quality food is essential for mental health and a good education, the chief minister said.

“Our aim is to provide opportunities for good education to the children of the poor,” he said. “I have seen children coming to school without breakfast and remaining without lunch till noon, so we have decided to provide meals and eggs two days a week. Azim Premji Foundation has joined hands with the government in this noble cause to provide eggs and additional nutritious food to children four days a week,” he said. He urged schoolchildren to develop scientifically and intellectually, stating that only then can they become socially responsible. “Our aim is to provide opportunities for good education to the children of the poor.
