Green Run feels relaunched for 2024

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (WTKR) – Green Run still remembers how the 2023 season ended abruptly before the Stallions were ready to go home.

Indian River took the field of Green Run and prevented it from winning the Region 5A championship for the third year in a row.

“It was really bad,” said senior wide receiver Jayden Anderson. “It was the last game for our seniors and we couldn’t move forward with those guys.”

“It’s very tough,” added senior quarterback K’Saan Farrar. “We’re trying harder in the weight room and on the field because we suffered a loss last season.”

While the motivation is there for 2024, many of the key playmakers that were on last season’s roster are not. Head coach Brandon Williams returns seven starters from last year’s group and knows he’s lost some good players, but doesn’t necessarily see that as a problem.

“This group that’s coming in now has been in the program for a while,” he noted. “They’ve been waiting for their turn and can’t wait to get on the field, so this is their chance. We’re a very talented team across the board and, once again, the sky’s the limit.”

One of the few experienced players Williams is bringing back is Farrar, who transferred into the program and took over the starting position last season. Now that he’s been in the system for a year, he’s ready to take his leadership skills and game to the next level.

“I feel very comfortable in this environment,” Farrar said. “It feels like home now. My first year was kind of an adjustment period. Now it feels great.”

“Coming back with experience as a signal-caller is half the battle in high school football,” Williams added. “You have a quarterback, you have a team, and with our quarterback coming back for his senior year and looking to make a difference, I’m really excited for this season.”

The Stallions enter the season on a 38-game winning streak in the Beach District and have gone 38-3 over the past three seasons, but they have higher goals. This year’s group has history under its belt and believes it can overcome the hurdle of reaching the state championship game.

“I think we can definitely overcome this hurdle and make it to the state championship game,” Anderson explains. “We come to work.”

“We’re here to accomplish a goal that we haven’t accomplished yet here at Green Run High School,” Williams stressed. “We’re not running from it, that’s pretty obvious, so we’ve got to keep going, keep our heads down and stay positive and keep doing what we’re doing.”

Green Run opens its season on August 29 when the Stallions host Tallwood.
