BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut (WTNH) – Police confirmed to News 8 that shots were fired at the home and car of former Bridgeport mayoral candidate John Gomes on Thursday.

Bridgeport police also said they could not confirm whether the shooting targeted Gomes, saying they continue to believe this is a high-crime area.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, John Gomes said:

“I am grateful to everyone who has reached out to check on my well-being and safety. I am deeply shaken, but by the grace of God, I was sleeping in my bedroom and unharmed when my vehicle and home were shot at.

I hope and pray that this was an isolated incident. It is unacceptable to be subjected to such threats in the community where I have settled and live peacefully. This area has long been on the city’s radar as a hot spot of violence that needs urgent attention before more people are killed or seriously injured.

My greatest hope is that this was not politically motivated or a form of retaliation related to my decision to exercise my legal rights in the 2024 election. I trust that the police department will conduct a thorough investigation so that I can return to my daily life and occupations without fear of retaliation.”
