Trey Lance on the season opener: Big game for me

The Cowboys were supposed to have a battle for the backup quarterback spot, but nothing has come of it. Cooper Rush is still the No. 2 and Trey Lance isn’t a real threat.

Regardless, the 2021 third-place team is facing a big preseason.

Lance is expected to become a free agent in the offseason.

“I find everything works how it’s supposed to be,” Lance said Friday, via Patrik Walker of the team website. “That’s the truth. I believe I’m where I’m supposed to be. I’m living in the present, one day at a time, taking it one meeting and one milestone at a time and controlling what I can control.”

Lance hasn’t played since the 2023 preseason, when he had 62 snaps in the first two tryouts. The 49ers traded him to the Cowboys after the final preseason game, which Lance did not play.

Although he has been in the league for three seasons, Lance has only played eight games, four of which have been starts, and has thrown 102 passes.

He needs as many repetitions as possible.

“I’m approaching this game the same way I approach every other game in my life – college, high school,” Lance said. “I don’t think I’m going to put too much more effort into it. I’m not going to play any harder than I have in the past, or at least not any harder.”

“Big game for me. Big game for us. I’m excited to go out there and play well.”
