Here’s how to make your handmade Rakhi.

Raksha Bandhan 2024: Materials required to make a handmade Rakhi

Rakhi may require as many or as few ingredients as it all depends on the look you want. However, the basic materials you will need are Rakhi thread (silk thread, wool, satin ribbon), glue, scissors and decoration materials like colored paper, foam, wool, sequins, tassels, beads etc. The decoration materials will depend on your requirements. Colors can be chosen according to the siblings’ preferences. Remember to make a checklist of your siblings’ favorite colors, designs and other elements and base the Rahi decor accordingly. This attention to detail is thoughtful and considerate.

Raksha Bandhan 2024: Method

In the middle of the thread, create a base for all your decorations. Cut out a rectangular/round piece of cardstock or sturdy paper as the base. To make a fabric rakhi that will last longer, use cotton or felt, double layered for extra thickness, and use it as the base. For a more fabric-covered rakhi, all the decoration elements can be fabric cutouts, perhaps something as simple as a car cutout to reflect your brother’s passion for cars.

If you are into festive maximalism, decorate the base with decorative materials like stones, beads and tassels along the edge. Sticking to a color pattern while decorating will add the harmony to the rakhi. If you are going for a pure pearl look, string the colored beads on the rakhi thread.

However, if you prefer minimalism, you can skip glittery decoration elements like sequins or beads and opt for a personal touch. On a piece of paper, scribble a sketch of you and your brother and stick it in the center. For a minimalistic decoration, add stones to the outer ring of the cut-out sketch. If you are not much of an artist, you can add a paper cut-out with your brother’s nickname or any other pet name you call him by. If neither of the two options appeal to you, you can channel your inner creative side with your origami skills. You can crumple and fold paper to create beautiful flowers or swans above the rakhi base.

However, a well-made Rakhi is not just about aesthetics, but also about how personal it resonates with both of you. It’s a celebration of sibling rivalry, love, and all the little acts of care in between – be it carefully sharing a piece of chocolate with a scale, staying up late to help with projects, or rolling up your sleeves to intimidate bullies. Raksha Bandhan is a celebration of your journey together and the promise to have each other’s backs unconditionally.
