80 tons of sweet corn find their way to the Sun Prairie Corn Fest

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WMTV) – On Saturday, 80 tons of sweet corn were picked, steamed and unloaded for the 71st annual Sun Prairie Sweet Corn Festival at Angell Raceway.

The festival began on Wednesday, August 14th and continues through Sunday, August 18th at Angell Park, where fresh, Wisconsin-grown sweet corn will be available for all to enjoy. Steamed corn will be sold only on Saturday, August 17th and Sunday, August 18th while supplies last.

Sun Prairie Mayor Paul Esser says Sun Prairie is the only place he can imagine this festival.

“Nobody else would have the courage to do it, nor would they have access to the corn or the ability to cook it. You need a place like Sun Prairie that has the equipment and has invested in it over the years.”

For high school graduate Cassie Coffey, the festival is something she looks forward to every year.

“This is my second year as a volunteer and I am really excited to be here, meeting lots of new people and giving back to the community.”

Coffey and Audrey Seefeld have the coveted “Butter Kids” jobs for the weekend, where they can excitedly earn tips for their college fund.

For freshman college student Audrey Seefeld, the Corn Festival was an important part of her childhood.

“I used to come here with my family all the time. They came from far away and we went to the corn festival and ate corn.”

The full 2024 Sweet Corn Festival schedule can be found online at the Sun Prairie Chamber.
