If you cut mold off your bread before eating it, we have bad news for you

Have you ever spotted a few mold spots on a slice of bread and decided to cut them away and eat the rest? Don’t worry, we won’t judge you too harshly. It’s a Cost of living crisis After all, food is not exactly cheap.

But according to NHS surgeons and TikTok According to health educator Dr. Karan Raj, this is not a good idea and could even put your health at risk.

In a video on his popular TikTok channel, the surgeon points out: “You have to know that there is no ‘clean part’ when it comes to moldy bread.”

Can you ever safely eat moldy bread?

In the video, Raj says that “the furry stuff you see on the surface is just the crown jewels of the form.” I know, I’m sorry. But this is important.

He continues: “(The furry stuff) is literally the reproductive organs of the ‘sporangium’, which release thousands of spores that spread everywhere.”

He adds that in this case you will not see the “hidden roots” called “haifi” and further advises throwing away not only the whole slice but the whole bread.

While Raj acknowledges that there are helpful molds, such as antibiotics and even tasty molds, such as some cheeses, the mold in bread is often harmful. He adds that “you can tell whether a mold is harmless or not just by looking at it.”

This is because some of these molds can produce “pretty nasty mycotoxins” that can be deadly.

Finally, if you plan on toasting the bread to kill the mold, Raj says that won’t work: “So just throw the damn moldy thing away.”
