Swinney says Vizzina is “far ahead” of what he had hoped

Swinney says Vizzina is “far ahead” of what he had hoped

With all the discussion surrounding Clemson’s quarterback situation, much of the attention is rightly focused on starting quarterback Cade Klubnik.

Klubnik will be the Tigers’ key player in 2024, but there are still a lot of questions about his successor, Christopher Vizzina. Vizzina, a former four-star recruit in the class of 2023 who redshirted his freshman year, struggled mightily in Clemson’s spring game. On the other hand, former walk-on redshirt sophomore Trent Pearman played a stellar game, which has people wondering who will be the backup come the start of the season.

There is no doubt about it, as Vizzina has secured the position as a reserve player. Head coach Dabo Swinney is pleased with what he has seen from the young quarterback.

“He’s a lot further along than I hoped,” Swinney said Thursday. “I’m really proud of him. He and Cade have had about four or five really good days in a row.”

“His ball placement and the game has really slowed down for him,” Swinney said. “He’s a really, really big kid and he can run. And he’s very accurate. It’s been a good camp for him. He’s coming out of it with a lot of confidence. And it’s good for the team to have confidence in him, too. He’s had some great performances, including a 2-minute touchdown (Thursday).”

While Swinney can be trusted without any concerns, we have not yet seen that with Vizzina.
