A well-thought-out living room layout helps to enhance the space by making it more functional for everyday use. To find out what elements make up a top-notch living room layout, we interviewed three interior designers and asked them to give their opinion.
Below they explain five features that all good living room layouts have in common.

Conversation-friendly setups
Tiffany Cassidy, principal designer at Lagnappe Custom Interiors, believes living room designs should encourage conversation. Cassidy emphasizes the importance of seating arrangements, stressing that they should feel intimate for communication and not be too far apart that people are shouting across the room.
She recommends creating different zones within the room. In these areas, consider incorporating lightweight folding furniture, such as extra ottomans or small chairs that can serve as extra seating when entertaining guests, Cassidy says. They’re easy to transport and small enough to put in a corner or under a console table.
Linda Hayslett, founder of LH.Designs, agrees that a variety of seating options in the living room is a must.
“That doesn’t necessarily mean a sofa and a couple of chairs, but there’s definitely a sofa with either ottomans or chairs, or possibly a combination of both,” she says. “A good living room design always includes seating, because who knows if you’re going to be entertaining friends and family there or just hanging out with the kids.”

Storage options
A living room that doesn’t incorporate storage into its decor is a deficiency, according to Cassidy. She explains the importance of having storage options in living spaces for blankets, games, books or other items that need a place when not in use.
The selection includes sideboards, ottomans with storage space, baskets and much more.
Exhibited works of art
No living room is complete without artwork, notes Hayslett. Every balanced space has artwork, especially living rooms, says Hayslett.
Where you place the artwork in your space is entirely up to you, explains the designer, adding that the medium you choose can also vary greatly.
“It may not be the main focus, or maybe it is, but artwork is there and helps to enhance the decor of a living room,” says Hayslett. Hayslett explains that it could be an object, a painting or a photograph and that it is an additional focal point alongside the furniture.
