On Wednesday at around 10:30 p.m., an American Airlines flight took off from Dallas to Madrid.

However, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the airline had to land mid-flight at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York because the on-board toilet overflowed.

American Airlines said the outage was due to a “maintenance issue.”

After the plane landed safely, the airline paid for hotel accommodation for the affected guests.

The customers were safely placed on a flight to their destination the next day.

Following the incident, an American Airlines spokesperson released an emailed statement.

“On August 7, American Airlines Flight 36, operating from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Madrid (MAD), was diverted to New York (JFK) due to a maintenance issue,” they said.

“The plane landed normally and is scheduled to depart again on (Thursday) evening with another aircraft.”

“We do not want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience.”

The FAA is still investigating the incident.
