Utes’ OC Andy Ludwig says before the SUU kick-off: “There is no reason for complacency”

As the Utah football team wrapped up its fall training camp, the media had the opportunity to sit down with head coach Kyle Whittingham’s assistant coaches for an in-depth discussion. The offensive and defensive teams each had 30 minutes with the media and provided insight into the team’s current situation. A notable theme in all of the discussions was the optimism surrounding the Utah offense.

After 15 training sessions, Utes offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig was confident about the team’s progress. While he acknowledged that there is still a lot of work to be done, he emphasized the significant improvements in all positions.

“I have seen great progress in all positions,” Ludwig noted. He made it clear that although the team has come a long way, there is no reason for complacency.

The defensive coaching group also agreed, emphasizing the strong competition between offense and defense in practice. The phrase “iron sharpens iron” was mentioned frequently, highlighting the mutual respect between the two units. The competitive nature of practice has encouraged growth and improvement on both sides of the ball.

Despite the progress, Ludwig spoke openly about the challenges the team faces. He stressed that football is a process with ups and downs. Mistakes are inevitable, but fixing them when they occur is crucial to the team’s development. “We are getting better every day,” Ludwig said, adding that improvement is ongoing both individually and collectively. He compared the process to life, where solving one problem often reveals a new one, requiring constant effort and adaptation.

Overall, optimism is at its peak within the Utah football program, and the team is focused on continuing its upward trend as the season approaches. The Utes enter the 2024 season with high expectations, with playoff hopes on the line.

If all goes according to plan and there are no injuries, Utah should be one of the 12 teams remaining, a journey that begins less than two weeks from today with Southern Utah on August 29 at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
