A church in Newark was damaged early Friday morning when a car drove into the side of it, Newark police said. The driver fled the scene and was not identified.

According to police, the driver was traveling west on West Cleveland Avenue at a “high rate of speed” toward the intersection with New London Road at 2:06 a.m. As he passed through the intersection, he left the road at the northwest corner and struck St. John AM Church. The driver fled the scene of the accident and a description of him is not currently available.

Rev. Blaine Hackett posted on Facebook that the church had suffered “significant structural damage” and posted photos of broken stained glass windows and debris covering the pews.

“Yet God is good and can do beyond all we can ask or imagine,” Hackett wrote.

Newark Police continue to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. T. Maiura at 302-366-7100, extension 3423, or [email protected].
