Venice Film Festival director hints at the ‘polarizing’ story of Folie À Deux

Summary

  • Joker: Folie À Deux will be darker, more imaginative, bolder and incredibly more original than its predecessor.
  • Director Todd Phillips takes great liberties in developing an origin story for the Joker, creating tension and mystery.
  • The upcoming film will introduce musical elements and visual playfulness and explore Arthur Fleck’s troubled mind.

The upcoming Joker: Slide àTwo The film is set to premiere in October, but the Venice Film Festival director has only hinted at what to expect in the film. The sequel to 2019’s Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, has been highly anticipated since the original film’s theatrical release. Although the film exists in a separate branch of the DCU, it became incredibly popular as a standalone DC project thanks to the intellectual storyline and the gripping narrative that sees Arthur Fleck slowly drifting into his broken mind. Ahead of the film’s worldwide release in October 2024, Joker: Slide àTwo is scheduled to be part of the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

This event will showcase and highlight some of the biggest films of the upcoming season before the awards ceremony begins next year. As part of the event, Alberto Barbera, the artistic director of the event, has made preparations to ensure that the films and celebrities get their chance to shine during the festival and he has offered some inside information about the story of the Joker sequel in an interview with Vanity Fair. When asked: “She will be back with Joker: Foil A Deux this year. The first film was somewhat polarizing at its Venice premiere. Do you expect the sequel to provoke a similar reaction?” Barbera replied:

Yes, I think so. If you’re just expecting a second part of the previous one, with exactly the same kind of narrative and situation etc., you’re wrong because the subject matter is much darker. It’s much more imaginative from every point of view. It’s totally unexpected. I think it’s very daring, brave, creative and an incredibly original film.

Will “Joker: Folie à Deux” be a worthy sequel?

The trailers for Joker: Folie à Deux make it look like it will be heading in the same direction as Joker, which I’m very excited about. When it was first announced that it was a musical, I didn’t know what to make of it, but what I’ve seen so far makes me believe it will be a worthy sequel. I’m not sure if it will be better than the first film, but that’s always very difficult to achieve.

Why “Joker: Folie À Deux” already looks “more imaginative” than the original film

The Joker and Harley Quinn will build on the original story

Barbera’s statement suggests that difficult to predict what to expect Joker: Slide à Two in a way that resembles the anticipation of the original film. While the story is loosely based on the Joker from the Batman In the comics, director Todd Phillips took liberties and created something new. It’s an origin story that’s completely different from anything the Joker ever reveals in the comics.

The character’s mystery, his urge to lie and make up stories, and his desire to create chaos and mass destruction are all inherent, and in some ways these traits are evident in Fleck. The fact that Arthur Fleck is such a unreliable narrator creates tension and a wall that prevents the audience from ever fully embracing him and understanding the character. Considering his role as a severely twisted and monstrous villain, this is for the best. However, it seems that Joker: Slide àTwo will take things to the next level.

The introduction of musical elements, the strong visual playfulness and the jump back into the disturbed mind of Arthur Fleck are sure to be an adventure. The trailers and Barbera’s comments suggest that the upcoming film will be a spectacle that moves the franchise forward and builds on the creativity and success of the original. Now it only remains to be seen how Joker: Slide àTwo actually runs when the film hits theaters in October.
