The Art of Power: My Story as America’s First Female Speaker of the House of Representatives by Nancy Pelosi is a solid read from someone who has been at the center of American politics since she was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1987. In an era when the average American adult reads just over five books a year, Pelosi’s book is perfect. It’s an easy read, deals with current issues, and is general enough to keep the average reader engaged until the end.
Pelosi emphasizes that the book is not an autobiography. It is the story of her time as the 52nd Speaker of the US House of Representatives. It is also a history of the achievements of the Democrats over the past 37 years. We Democrats do not tell our story often enough in clear, well-considered prose. We need more books like this one.
I lived through that time as an adult, but Pelosi has put together a narrative that not only sounds contemporary, but also cuts out a lot of the partisan political waffle that a lesser writer might write, and focuses on important events and legislation from her unique perspective.
Some say Nancy Pelosi is a lightning rod in politics. I say she is a person with a successful life who wrote a book that is well worth reading.
