LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – To combat the ongoing opioid crisis and promote healthy lifestyles, Anthony’s Block Party is hosting an event to raise awareness about overdose prevention. The event will be held on Friday, August 16th from 6-9 p.m. at the Roots Recovery Center and is a tribute to Overdose Awareness Month.
Attendees can expect a fun evening of mocktails, live music, and information sessions on overdose prevention and available community resources. Organizers hope to create a drug-free environment while educating the public about the dangers of substance abuse.
“If you know a little bit about what an overdose is or what an overdose looks like, we can prevent a death in our community. So it’s very, very important to raise awareness, break down that stigma and engage and educate our community on this issue,” said Jaime Perez of the Laredo Health Department.
The health department reports a decrease in cases of overdoses this year. Last year there were 66 cases, so there are now only 30 confirmed cases. Nevertheless, the importance of continuing to raise awareness and continuing prevention efforts is emphasized.
By creating a positive and stimulating atmosphere, the street festival wants to show that beautiful experiences are possible without drugs.
