The City of Rockville Police Department, in conjunction with the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, will host a gun buyback event at RedGate Park (14500 Avery Road) on Saturday, August 17. Participants will receive a $100 Visa gift card for functional handguns, rifles and shotguns and $200 Visa gift cards for functional assault rifles and privately manufactured firearms (ghost guns).

These events have generally been met with mixed reactions, due to the many vocal criticisms in social media posts about the events. However, the two previous gun buyback events in Rockville saw over 300 guns turned in. An event in Germantown earlier this year saw over 150 guns turned in.

The press release states: “Rockville is offering community members the opportunity to voluntarily, anonymously and safely dispose of unwanted firearms during a gun buyback event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, at RedGate Park, 14500 Avery Road.

The City of Rockville Police Department, in conjunction with the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, is sponsoring the event, where community members can voluntarily drive up and surrender firearms, with no identification required and no questions asked.

Community members will receive a $100 Visa gift card for functioning handguns, rifles and shotguns and a $200 Visa gift card for functioning assault rifles and privately manufactured firearms (ghost guns). Gift cards are limited and subject to availability. The RCPD will have the final say on which firearms will be eligible for gift card issuance. Non-functioning firearms and ammunition will be accepted without exchange of compensation.
