Aaron Hernandez Show, Explained: Release Date, Trailer and More on FX’s ‘American Sports Story’

FX returns once again to the world of sports and seeks to investigate the life, death and crimes of another controversial athlete.

“American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” is set to hit theaters in September. It is the first titular “sports story” offering, but the third time FX has aired a show centered around a shocking sports scandal.

The first installment, “The People vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story,” was a hit, winning nine Emmys, two Golden Globes and four Critics’ Choice Television Awards. The second installment, “Clipped,” which came out last year, didn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor but still received generally positive reviews.

Now FX is turning its attention to Hernandez, the former Patriots star and convicted murderer who died in 2017. The show is set to feature an ensemble cast.

The actors have a lot of work to do. In addition to the actors portraying key figures from Hernandez’s childhood, others also have to portray Tom Brady, Tim Tebow, Bill Belichick and Urban Meyer.

Here’s what you need to know about FX’s upcoming release, set for mid-September 2024.

What is “American Sports Story”?

American Sports Story is an upcoming sports anthology series created by Stu Zicherman. Murphy is one of several executive producers attached to the project. It is a spin-off of the critically acclaimed American Story series created by Murphy and co-creator Brad Falchuk.

“American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” is the first of what will likely be several series about sports controversies. Interestingly, neither “The People vs. OJ Simpson” nor “Clipped” are included under the “American Sports Story” umbrella.
