An American Airlines flight from Boston to Rochester was forced to make an emergency landing after smoke was discovered in the cabin.

In March last year, a Spirit Airlines flight from Dallas to Orlando was forced to make an emergency landing in Jacksonville after a fire broke out in an overhead compartment, filling the cabin with smoke.

A passenger on board described the moment a retired firefighter put out the fire, which was said to have been caused by a device connected to a portable battery in a backpack.

After the safe landing, ten people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries due to the smoke.

The FAA later confirmed that the cause was a battery.
