Use your miles with open arms: fly to Europe with Singapore Airlines in Business Class

Singapore Airlines is offering its new monthly offer “Spontaneous Escapes”: discounted reward offers valid for bookings made by August 31 and travel in September.

US routes are offered with a 30% discount:

  • New York JFK – Frankfurt: 56,700 miles each way in Business Class and 36,400 miles in Premium Economy (New York – Frankfurt Eastbound, closed from September 20 – 23, 2024)
  • Los Angeles – Singapore: 52,500 miles in Premium Economy
  • Singapore to New York JFK: (one-way only) 56,350 miles in Premium Economy (blocked September 1-8, 2024.)
  • Newark – Singapore: 56,350 miles in Premium Economy

If an airline offers discounts on awards on a route, it is worth checking whether availability is really good. Usually, a discount corresponds to a low load factor on a flight.

The same applies to new flights, which often take a while to be fully booked. Award seats can be good in these cases. Or an airline may initially load up its inventory with a lot of space for a new flight.

The “fifth freedom” from Singapore to Europe and Asia can be a boon for award flights. In fact, it is in line with the airline’s plans to discontinue the Houston-Manchester, UK route in the spring.

There is also often plenty of space for award flights in business class on the New York JFK – Frankfurt route. And not just for the period of this promotion and not just with Singapore miles. And not just two seats. I see many dates with four and even six award seats in business class.

While you can book for 56,700 KrisFlyer points with this promotion, you can book anytime for 60,000 Air Canada Aeroplan points. (Outside of the promotion period, expect to pay 81,000 KrisFlyer points.)

  • In October, award seats are even better than in September, they are great during the winter off-season and are also valid at the end of the schedule in July. Singapore regularly releases award seats when the schedules open.
  • You should book this through Air Canada Aeoplan when saver seats are available. Singapore often has seats available at an additional cost of ~20,000 points using your own miles.
  • American Express, Chase, Capital One and Bilt will switch to Aeroplan. American Express, Chase, Capital One and Citi will switch to Singapore Airlines.

Singapore Airlines is a great way to get to Europe. You can add flights beyond Frankfurt with Lufthansa via Aeroplan or with Singapore’s Star Alliance award chart. But this flight across the pond is a great experience.
