The big Mets have struck big

The Mets had scored just five runs in their last four games before Wednesday, and they surpassed that number in just one inning against the Athletics.

Thanks to six runs in the seventh inning, the Mets (62-58) beat the Oakland Athletics 9-1 on Wednesday night at Citi Field. The Mets took a 3-1 lead into the innings and the Big Boppers quadrupled that lead with a barrage of hits.

RBI hits by Francisco Lindor, JD Martinez and Pete Alonso (plus an RBI sac fly by Brandon Nimmo) helped extend the Mets’ lead to 9-1. Alonso finished the game 4-for-4 with three RBIs, raising his OPS for the season to .804 and surpassing Lindor for the team’s second-highest OPS (among qualified hitters).

Alonso’s second hit of the night was his 26th home run of the season – a solo hit that gave the Mets a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Mets starter David Peterson held the A’s hitless through the first three innings, but conceded a single in the fourth after allowing a leadoff walk. Three consecutive outs – a flyout, putout and strikeout – kept the runners at bay and secured Peterson’s scoreless outing.

Peterson allowed an unearned run over 6 13 innings, allowing four strikeouts and four walks in a game that occasionally faltered but ended with his sixth good start of the season.

The Mets struck first in the second inning when a double by Mark Vientos with one out brought Jesse Winker home from second base and moved Alonso to third base.

Lindor’s solo hit in the third inning gave the Mets a 2-0 lead and was his 100th home run as a Met. Lindor is the 17th Met to reach the 100-home run mark with the franchise and is one of three active Mets with the title, along with Brandon Nimmo and Alonso.

Lindor finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, raising his OPS to over .800 despite a recent slump in performance.

The Mets and Athletics will face off in the series on Thursday at 1:10 ET, with Jose Quintana facing Mitch Spence.
