Former A-State teacher charged with theft at art center

JONESBORO, Arkansas (KAIT) – Arkansas State University Police have released details of a theft of nearly $3,000 worth of art department items.

According to a probable cause affidavit, officers noticed the theft at the Windgate 3D Arts building on July 29.

Investigators said surveillance video shows 40-year-old Just Emerson of Jonesboro and a woman stealing about $2,984.12 worth of items from the building over a four-day period beginning on July 19 and loading them into a red Subaru Crosstrek and a white GMC Sierra.

The affidavit states the theft was discovered after Emerson had previously taken three pottery wheels from the building for personal use at a business he and the woman operated.

UPD stated that the stolen items were purchased with funds from the state of Arkansas and donations to the university’s art department, but that Emerson has no legal claim to the property.

Emerson is charged with grand theft and is due back in court on Friday, September 27.

Arkansas State University has listed Emerson as an instructor of ceramics and 3D workshop technology at the Windgate 3D Arts Center.

Communications director Todd Clark told K8 News that Emerson resigned from his position on July 20 and no longer works at A-State.

Online court records show Emerson was arrested Monday afternoon and released Wednesday afternoon.
