Obituary for John James McQueary | State College, PA

John James McQueary, 83, of State College, PA, passed away at dawn on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, PA. He was surrounded by his loved ones who will continue to honor him by living each day to the fullest.

John was born on May 4, 1941 in Buffalo, NY to the late Elmer and Mary (Betty) Bulgey McQueary. He was predeceased by his three sisters, Arlyn, Carolyn and Donnalyn. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Anne Hausrath McQueary.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind three children: son John McQueary and wife Heather of State College, PA; daughter Kelly Clark and husband Joseph of Beaufort, NC; and son Michael McQueary of Reston, VA; and nine grandchildren.

John graduated from South Park High School in Buffalo, NY in 1959. After serving as a corpsman and medical technician in the U.S. Navy, John worked as a nurse practitioner at Duke University and later enrolled in the university’s Physician Assistant Program. After becoming a PA, he continued working at Duke and enrolled at North Carolina Central University in 1978, where he earned a degree in educational administration.

Following a successful term as the second president of the AAPA (American Association of Physician Assistants) and his instrumental role as a pioneer of PA, he was inducted into the Duke University PA Program Alumni Hall of Fame in 2007.

McQueary began his career in 1981 at Centre Medical and Surgical Associates in State College, where he held the title of COO and Director of Administration until his retirement in 2013.

A private memorial service, led by Rev. Scott Ho?man, was held at State College Presbyterian Church, where John served as a deacon and elder of the church.

Whether watching John coach countless children on the Little League field or listening to him lovingly recount stories from his childhood, John’s caring and compassionate spirit will continue to fill the hearts of his many colleagues, friends and family members. He was a big man with an even bigger heart. He will be missed by many, but he will continue to inspire them to live each day by his motto that every day is a great day.
