Camp Moxy Jo’s in Federal Way offers cool crash pads full of nostalgia

It’s groovy. It’s psychedelic. It’s crazy – welcome to Camp Moxy Jo’s!

“Our slogan is, ‘A funky campground that’s not too funky,'” says Joanna Hall, owner of Camp Moxy Jo’s.

Camp Moxy Jo’s is located on a 1-acre property in Federal Way, right on the border of Tacoma. The camp is decorated in the style of the 1970s, a much simpler and funkier time.

“We have five different places down here in the warehouse,” Hall said. “We have a vintage camper. We have two RVs. And then we have two trailers. And then we also have an Airbnb in the warehouse in the basement.”

For Hall, a lover of all things vintage, Camp Moxy Jo’s is a passion project and a dream come true.

“I don’t believe in new things,” she said. “You can always reuse old things instead of buying something new and throwing it in the trash. So I just help make that possible.”

Every corner of the campground takes you back in time. There are a handful of crash pads to choose from, decorated in classic 70’s style – retro and relaxed. All of the crash pads at Camp Moxy Jo’s have so much personality and fun names, like Talulu.

“It was the first one we bought for the campground itself and I immediately fell in love with its interior. The interior is completely original. Nothing has been remodeled here,” said Hall.

Hall’s favorite shelter, however, is one called “Green Beans.”

“It’s just original, full ’70s style, the green, the orange, the yellow, almost everything is original,” Hall said. “It just has a really cozy feel. And when you’re sitting in the RV, you know it’s elevated and you just feel like you’re in some kind of treehouse.”

But Camp Moxy Jo’s offers more than just places to sleep. Hall said campers love their cool hangout spot called the Rainy Day Shelter.

“If you want to sit in the sun and relax and enjoy the fire all year round, this is the place,” she said. “That’s why we call it the ‘Rainy Day Shelter,’ because as we know, in the Pacific Northwest, you never know if it’s going to rain. So you can still enjoy the outdoors and have a quality time with your friends and family.”

Camp Moxy Jo’s helps campers relax and unwind, one shelter at a time.

“I’ve had a guest who has stayed here several times now and she wrote in our guest book and said it reminded her of her childhood,” Hall said. “We all grow up too fast and forget what it’s like to be young and play, and that’s what I want people to do here.”
