5 Looks Under $60 on Every Student’s Wishlist

5 Looks Under on Every Student’s Wishlist

August is coming to an end, and for some parents and their children on campus, that can only mean one thing: Campus is calling.

If your child is heading off to college in the next few weeks, you’ve probably already outfitted them with all the dorm essentials, from shower caddys to twin-sized sheets.

But something you may not have given much thought to is the actual decor of the dorm room. While this isn’t important to every student, some of the more creative and interior design-minded (ahem, I mean you, parents of art students) may find that the basic decor of student accommodation leaves a lot to be desired.

To make life on campus a little cozier, we’ve put together this list of five trendy dorm room decors from Instagram. You can snag each of them for under $60—a small price to pay for a cozy and inviting semester.

1. Artificial hanging vines

One of our favorite affordable looks that can instantly liven up a dorm room is these green vines — that don’t need watering — featured by @bedsandbedrooms.

“Artificial hanging vines are a real eye-catcher if you want to transform a bare wall,” says Anna Tatsonisenior designer at Decorilla. “What I like most about them is that they bring nature indoors without the hassle of maintenance, which is perfect for busy students. I like to combine them with fairy lights for a more magical effect.”

2. Glass side table

A big challenge when decorating a dorm room is making a temporary space feel less temporary and more like home. Luckily, pieces like this glass side table from @cozycoutureinteriors strike the perfect balance between minimal space and a distinctly living room-inspired feel.

“A glass side table is ideal for a dorm,” says Hagan KapplerDesigner and owner of Daisy. “It takes up little visual space, keeps everything you need within easy reach and is available in many affordable options. In a small room, clear glass also makes the space feel more open.”

3. Neon sign

Neon colors have been trending for a while now and are a particularly fun and inexpensive way to brighten up a dull room in an apartment complex. For proof, just check out this design by @collectedlbk.

“I’ve noticed that neon signs are becoming a must-have when decorating dorm rooms,” says Tatsioni. “They add a touch of personality and a pop of color that instantly elevates any space – whether it’s your name, a favorite quote, or a logo or shape, neon signs add a fun and vibrant energy.”

4. Nubby Desk Chair

Your student will (hopefully) spend a lot of time at their desk, so why not make it extra comfortable? We love the idea of swapping out a regular desk chair for something fancier, like this one from @dormify.

“A comfortable desk chair is a must for any dorm,” says Kappler. “Long study sessions require good back support to maintain concentration and good posture. For dorm life, choose a chair that supports you but still saves space when you’re not using it.”

5. Floor cushions

Sometimes a study session or late night get-together requires more seating, and these floor cushions from @featured.design are perfect for that.

“Floor cushions are an incredibly versatile and cozy addition to any dorm room,” says Tatsioni. “They provide extra seating without taking up much space and can be easily stored away when you don’t need them. They’re also perfect for creating a casual and inviting atmosphere for relaxing or studying.”
