The Veterans Resource Group (VRG) is hosting a “Greet, Meet and Eat Day” on August 24th from 9am to noon at the Greenville Library Pavilion. The event promises a day of food and fun and invites all veterans and their families to come learn more about the VRG, get information on eligibility and meet other veterans. There will also be prizes to be won.

“We are a nonprofit organization,” said VRG founder Gloria Owens. “Everything we do is funded by donations. Last month alone, we were able to spend over $2,000 on school uniforms and shoes.”

Owens stressed that the organization’s mission is to “serve above and beyond the call of duty,” which it accomplishes through outreach efforts such as feeding and clothing the homeless and donating to various causes in the community.

In recent months, VRG has sponsored a group of Butler County students by donating gift cards from Walmart and Hibbett Shoe Store for school supplies. In addition, the group has donated to homeless shelters in Montgomery, Birmingham and Pensacola.

The VRG, which is open to all veterans, meets on the first and third Friday of each month at 11 a.m. in Beeland Park. Meetings include lunch, prayers and an open discussion forum.

“We are a prayer group and a safe place for veterans to discuss any topic,” Owens added.

Local Vietnam veteran Larry Lewis expressed his gratitude for the VRG’s presence in the community.

“It’s great that veterans have a place to go and socialize,” Lewis said. “And it’s great that they’re still serving and giving back to the community.”

For more information or to address direct needs within the community, Owens can be contacted at 334-368-0540.
