Writer and director Andrew Stanton announced that the fifth TOY STORY film will follow the characters’ struggle to remain relevant in the modern world.

“(Through these characters) we all learned about loyalty, belonging and friendship. These characters gave us a unique perspective on growing up and dealing with life, and in all of the TOY STORY films, the toys’ primary job was to be there for their children,” Stanton told an audience during Disney’s D23 conference.

“In TOY STORY 5, the toys’ job becomes exponentially more difficult as our toy crew competes directly with what kids are obsessed with today: electronics,” he added.

The teaser image released during the announcement showed the silhouette of a child under a blanket illuminated by a tablet, while Buzz, Woody and the gang peer anxiously over the foot of the bed.

Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced work on the film in February 2023, but gave no insight into the plot at the time. Shortly after, Tim Allen confirmed that he had been contacted to reprise his role as Buzz Lightyear, although he was unsure if he would accept and expressed his concerns about further expanding the franchise.

“(I wondered) if four is too many. Will five be too many?” Allen told THE TONIGHT SHOW in 2023. “The writer who’s doing (the fifth film) wrote one of the better ones and said, ‘If I hadn’t gotten this right, I wouldn’t do it.’ It could be a very, very interesting kind of reunion.”

The update on TOY STORY 5 was just one of many exciting reveals during this year’s D23 conference. Disney also shared new information on FROZEN III, ZOOTOPIA 2, and an upcoming LILO & STITCH live-action remake.

TOY STORY 5 is scheduled to be released on June 19, 2026.

Movieguide® previously reported:

Will TOY STORY 5 maintain the uplifting Christian morality story and family-friendly nature of the previous films, or will it follow the poor example of the spin-off film LIGHTYEAR?

The films in the TOY STORY series have already won Movieguide® Awards. Each of them received high praise for their strong moral message and family friendliness. They all had a strong biblical and Christian message.

“TOY STORY shows that friendship and forgiveness triumph over jealousy, envy and adversity,” said Movieguide® publisher Dr. Ted Baehr about the first episode.

Pixar’s Lucy Lalaverde said, “Working on TOY STORY 3 was definitely a unique experience. We all knew we were doing something special, something that would bring our mothers to tears.”

“Listen, we’re very proud to be making family films,” said Jonas Rivera, producer of TOY STORY 4. “TOY STORY 4 is really a love letter to our families. This is for our parents, this is for our wives, this is for our kids. We love you.”
