Lt. Col. John D. Fleming ’94, USMC (Ret.), has been appointed director of the Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center (VRSC), a division of the Division of Student Affairs at Texas A&M University.

Founded in 2012, VRSC provides personalized and ongoing support to Aggie veterans and Aggies with military backgrounds who already have a bachelor’s or master’s degree, helping them successfully transition to and through Texas A&M. The department offers a welcoming space, peer leadership, innovative programs, and a wide range of tools and resources to promote individual academic and personal success.

Since 2020, Fleming has been the operations manager for the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets and previously served as the director of training for the cadets.

“It is an honor to continue to serve the current student body, and as one of the finest veterans institutions in the country, service to our country is deeply rooted in the fabric of Texas A&M,” Fleming said. “Aggie veterans, military-connected Aggies and their families deserve the very best we can offer.”

“John brings a wealth of experience to the position of VRSC Director,” said Brigadier General Joe E. Ramirez (Class of 1979, USA, retired), Texas A&M Vice President for Student Affairs. “I am confident that John will use his background and experience to build upon the solid foundation Jerry Smith has created and lead VRSC to even greater heights. I look forward to working with John and the great team at VRSC who do much to support our student veterans at Texas A&M.”

Fleming replaces Col. Jerry Smith ’82, USMC (Ret.), who served as director since the department’s creation in 2012.

“I look forward to building on the great work of Col. Jerry Smith and the dedicated team of professionals at VRSC,” added Fleming. “Student veteran success will continue to be a focus as we set new and exciting standards for serving well those who have served.”

Fleming was a transportation and logistics officer and served with the First Marine Division, First and Second Marine Logistics Group, and Third Marine Aircraft Wing. Fleming deployed with the 11th and 24th Marine Expeditionary Units and completed multiple combat deployments in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

Fleming retired from active duty in 2015 with the rank of lieutenant colonel after commanding Marine Wing Support Squadron-371 in Yuma, Arizona.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Texas A&M and a Master of Military Studies from Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia.

Fleming and his wife of over 29 years, the former Amanda Miller of McAllen, have two children: Garrett and Gracen.
