Sioux City Police inform residents of impending demolition of railroad bridge on Big Sioux River

NORTH SIOUX CITY, SD (KTIV) – Sioux City Police say they are going door to door informing city residents within the BNSF Bridge exclusion zone of plans for two controlled demolitions in the coming days.

Earlier this week, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, also known as BNSF, announced its plans to demolish the railroad bridge over the Big Sioux River.

Sioux City Police are working with the contractor using explosives to destroy the collapsed railroad bridge.

The bridge was badly damaged in the June flood. According to BNSF, the first controlled demolition will take place on Monday, August 19, on the South Dakota side of the river.

All residents of the exclusion zone are requested to leave before 8:30 a.m. and remain in their homes during demolition work.

The list of streets in the exclusion zone includes:

  • 5600 block of Military Road, including the bridge
  • 800 block of River Drive
  • 2800 block of Boies Street
  • 2800 block of Home Street

As for the second explosion, it is not expected to occur on the Iowa side until Friday, September 6th.

Once this is completed, the remaining dismantling work is expected to take several weeks.
