Jon Stewart compares Trump campaign to Elton John’s song

After missing last week’s episode due to COVID, Jon Stewart checked in on the 2024 presidential election on Monday The daily show.

The comedian pointed out that twice-impeached former President Donald Trump had apparently reused some of his campaign nicknames that he had previously used against President Joe Biden after he dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new Democratic candidate.

“That’s bullshit, man!” Stewart shouted. “That’s when Elton John changed three words and then pretended that ‘Candle in the Wind’ was always about (Princess) Diana. It wasn’t! Very disrespectful to Marilyn (Monroe).”

John and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin released the popular single in 1974 as a tribute to Monroe, who died in 1962 at the age of 36. The Grammy winner sang a rewritten version of the song in 1997, after Diana died in August of that year, also at the age of 36.

As the live studio audience laughed at his little rant, Stewart asked, “Too early?”

After raising $310 million for her campaign in July and announcing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, Harris will formally accept her nomination next week at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Ahead of the presidential election on Tuesday, November 5, Trump and Harris have agreed to debate on ABC on September 10. Trump has suggested two other dates, September 4 on Fox News and September 25 on NBC, but the Harris team has not yet agreed to those dates.
