After a massive drop in travel during the COVID-19 pandemic, American vacationers are making up for the hours of lockdowns and travel restrictions by flocking to Europe in record numbers. With flights to Europe in demand and 13 million Americans expected to plan a European vacation for the busy summer season, an estimated 57,000 flights will depart from U.S. airports for Europe.

The world’s largest airline, American Airlines, is seeing a significant increase in its flight volumes. In anticipation of a record summer in 2024, American Airlines is launching three new European routes and resuming flights between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) in Italy.



American Airlines offers three new routes from the USA to Europe

American Airlines’ new European routes for summer 2024 will run from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to:

  • Copenhagen Kastrup Airport (CPH) in Denmark
  • Naples Capodichino International Airport (NAP) in Italy
  • Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) in France.

Also new for the summer are flights between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Spain’s Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN). Barcelona is the largest cruise port in the Mediterranean and handles more than three million cruise passengers annually with seven terminals.

In a company statement on American Airlines’ new European routes, Brian Znotins, the airline’s senior vice president of network and schedule planning, said:


“American is excited to add three new European destinations to its offering. New service from Philadelphia and expanded transatlantic service from Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth will offer customers convenient one-stop access to Europe from more than 200 unique U.S. destinations next summer.”

American Airlines’ longest routes between the USA and Europe

Of America Airlines’ routes from the United States to Europe this summer, America Airlines’ longest European routes in August 2023 are:

1 – DFW to FCO (5,614 miles)

On the 5,614-mile route between Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO), American Airlines offers 15,951 seats in each direction. American Airlines has no nonstop competition for the 10 hour 30 minute flight.

2 – ORD to ATH (5,463 miles)

On the 5,463-mile route between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), American Airlines offers 8,835 seats in each direction. On the 10-hour, 15-minute nonstop flights, United Airlines is American Airlines’ only competitor.

3 – LAX to LHR (5,456 miles)

On the 5,456-mile route between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and London Heathrow Airport (LHR), American Airlines offers 27,311 seats in each direction. On the 10-hour, 25-minute nonstop flight, American Airlines has nonstop competitors from British Airways, United Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.

4 – PHX to LHR (5,271 miles)

On the 5,271-mile route between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and London Heathrow Airport (LHR), American Airlines offers 8,463 seats in each direction. On the 10 hour and 5 minute flight, American Airlines has nonstop competitor British Airways.


5 – DFW to BCN (5,195 miles)

On the 5,195-mile route between Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN), American Airlines offers 1,092 seats in each direction.

Not surprisingly, most of these routes lead to sunny tropical destinations.

6 – DFW to FRA (5,143 miles)

On the 5,143-mile route between Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Frankfurt Airport (FRA), American Airlines offers 8,229 seats in each direction. For the 10-hour, 5-minute nonstop flight, German national carrier Lufthansa is American Airlines’ only competitor offering nonstop flights between DFW and FRA.

7 – PHL to ATH (5,035 miles)

On the 5,035-mile route between Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), American Airlines offers 7,509 seats in each direction. American Airlines has no nonstop competition for the 9 hour and 25 minute flight.


American Airlines suspends some flights between the US and Europe

On flights between the US and Europe, the traditional airline American Airlines announced that it would limit its flights to Europe due to delivery delays at Boeing. American Airlines was supposed to receive six Boeing 787 Dreamliners, an aircraft that American Airlines uses on many of its European routes. Instead of six, American Airlines will only receive three Boeing 787 Dreamliners in 2024, with the Seattle-based aircraft manufacturer blaming a shortage for the delays.

The following American Airlines routes are affected:

  • Start 3 September 2024:
    • Seasonal flights between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (ATH) are suspended.
    • Some flights between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) will be suspended until summer 2025.
    • American Airlines will suspend flights between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN). Flights will resume in summer 2025.
  • Start October 5, 2024Flights between Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) will be suspended.
  • Start October 26, 2024American Airlines will suspend all flights between Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and Dublin Airport. Previously, American Airlines operated annual flights between Dallas, Rome and Dublin.
